37 à 52 Le dernier et le grand jour de la fête.

La fête durait sept jours ; mais, d'après la loi, on en ajoutait un huitième qui était un sabbat, et qui se célébrait avec une solennité particulière. (Lévitique 23.36,39 ; Nombres 29.35 et suivants, Néhémie 8.18)

C'est là ce que notre évangéliste appelle le dernier et grand jour de la fête. Alors tout le peuple quittait les tentes où il avait séjourné pendant sept jours, (verset 2, note) et se rendait en procession dans le temple, où il offrait les sacrifices et accomplissait les autres cérémonies de ce grand jour.

- C'est là, au milieu de cette foule d'adorateurs, que Jésus se lève et prononce avec une grande solennité les paroles qui suivent. (Il se tenait debout et cria ; comparez verset 28, note.)

Avoir soif, c'est l'image par laquelle l'Ecriture exprime les besoins moraux et spirituels. Sous le soleil ardent de l'Orient, en des lieux arides qui souvent manquent d'eau, la soif tourmente fréquemment l'homme et le fait mourir dans de grandes souffrances. C'est la soif de l'âme que Jésus s'offre à étancher : qu'il vienne à moi, et qu'il boive !

- On admet généralement que dans l'occasion présente cette comparaison fut inspirée à Jésus par une cérémonie qui était propre à la fête des Tabernacles. Chaque jour, après le sacrifice du matin, un prêtre, un vase d'or à la main, descendait, suivi de la foule, à la source de Siloé et y puisait de l'eau qu'il portait au parvis du temple ; les autres sacrificateurs le recevaient au son des trompettes et des cymbales, et au milieu des acclamations joyeuses de la multitude.

Le peuple chantait : "Vous puiserez de l'eau avec joie aux sources du salut." (Esaïe 12.3) Alors le sacrificateur montait sur l'autel des holocaustes et accomplissait une libation en versant du côté de l'occident l'eau contenue dans le vase d'or et en répandant du coté de l'orient une coupe de vin. Cet usage prêtait aux paroles de Jésus une actualité particulière.

M. Godet objecte qu'il n'eût pas été digne de Jésus de prendre pour point de départ du témoignage important qu'il va rendre une cérémonie qui n'avait pas été ordonnée de Dieu dans la loi, mais inventée par les prêtres pour rappeler un des grands miracles accomplis dans le désert, l'eau jaillissant du rocher. (Exode 17 ; Nombres 20) Il pense que Jésus remonta jusqu'au bienfait divin que le rite institué par les hommes commémorait, et qu'il se compara, non à la cruche d'eau que répandait le sacrificateur, mais au rocher même d'où Dieu fit jaillir l'eau vive.

Cette explication n'est point opposée à la précédente, car la cérémonie de la fête des tabernacles permit à Jésus de faire allusion au rocher de Rephidim ; elle la complète heureusement. (Comparer 1Corinthiens 10.4)

Au dernier jour de la fête des tabernacles, les Juifs puisaient de l'eau et la déversaient devant l'Éternel. Il est supposé, dans ce texte, que Christ faisait allusion à cet acte.

Celui qui désire vraiment connaître la félicité éternelle, doit « s'attacher » spirituellement à Christ, afin que Celui-ci le conduise et l’enseigne.

La soif mentionnée dans ce texte exprime un puissant désir de bénédictions spirituelles ; rien d'autre ne peut satisfaire cette soif ; les influences sanctifiantes et bienfaisantes du Saint Esprit étaient ici sous-entendues : Jésus parla de fleuves d’eaux vives, appelant chacun à venir à Lui et à en boire de cette eau.

Les flots bienfaisants coulent constamment, comme un torrent et ils ont suffisamment de force pour renverser l'opposition des doutes et des craintes. Il y a une entière plénitude en Christ, et « grâce pour grâce », Jean 1:16*.

L'Esprit qui demeure et qui agit dans le cœur des croyants est une « fontaine d'eau vive, une source », de laquelle coule un flot qui nous rafraîchit et nous purifie. Nous n’attendons les dons miraculeux du Saint-Esprit que pour pouvoir en témoigner de la meilleure façon possible !

Des torrents d’eaux vives jaillirent de notre Rédempteur glorifié, et aujourd’hui encore, jusqu'aux endroits les plus reculés du globe. Puissions-nous être attentifs et soucieux de les faire connaître à d’autres !
