Luc passe sans transition apparente à cette seconde partie du discours.

Quelques-unes des pensées qui suivent se retrouvent dans la grande prophétie du retour de Christ. (Matthieu 24.42-51, voir les notes.)

Cependant, il y a, entre cette exhortation et les versets précédents, un lien profond : "Votre Père vous a donné un royaume (verset 32) qui vous élève au-dessus de toutes les inquiétudes de la vie, et auquel vous devez tout sacrifier ; soyez donc dans une attente vigilante jusqu'au moment où le Seigneur viendra vous mettre en possession de sa gloire. Cette attitude vous sera naturelle, car en vous détachant d'ici-bas, vous vous attacherez au ciel ; votre cœur suivra votre trésor (verset 34) et, en étant élevé au ciel, il demeurera dans l'attente de Celui qui y règne et qui doit vous y faire entrer."

L'image qui illustre ce devoir de la vigilance est empruntée à une maison dans laquelle les serviteurs se tiennent prêts, durant les veilles de la nuit, à recevoir leur maître qui revient d'un banquet de noces.

Leurs longs vêtements orientaux sont ceints autour de leurs reins, afin qu'ils puissent faire librement leur service. (Comparer 1Pierre 1.13 ; Ephésiens 6. 14.)

Ils ont à la main des lampes allumées ; ils sont prêts à ouvrir à leur maître dès qu'il aura heurté.

Le sens spirituel de ces images se comprend de lui-même. Les noces d'où revient le maître ne sont pas les siennes propres, mais celles d'un ami. Les noces de l'Epoux n'auront lieu qu'après son retour. (Comparer Matthieu 25.1 et suivants)
