C'est à tort qu'on a voulu conclure de cette réponse que le mal n'est pas un châtiment du péché en général, ou même parfois des péchés individuels.

Non seulement Jésus ne nie point cette justice qui s'exerce par les dispensations de Dieu dans la vie des hommes. Il dénonce, au contraire, des jugements semblables à ses interlocuteurs frivoles, pour leur faire sentir qu'ils sont tout aussi pécheurs que ceux dont ils racontent complaisamment la fin tragique.

Et les termes de cette menace peuvent, dans le cas actuel, s'entendre à la lettre : moins de quarante ans après, à la destruction de Jérusalem, des milliers de Juifs périrent, soit égorgés par les Romains, soit écrasés sous les décombres. (verset 4)

Mais les avertissements de Jésus élèvent notre pensée jusqu'au jugement éternel de Dieu, devant qui tous les hommes seront trouvés coupables et dignes de condamnation, à moins qu'ils ne se repentent.

- Nous conservons ce dernier mot dans notre version, quoiqu'il rende imparfaitement le terme de l'original, qui désigne un changement ou une transformation complète de l'homme moral. (Matthieu 3.2, 1e note.)

La repentance est toujours le commencement de cette œuvre divine dans l'homme.

D'autres traduisent par le mot de conversion, ou se convertir, ce qui n'est pas non plus exact. Quoi qu'il en soit, être régénéré ou périr, telle est l'alternative rigoureuse que Jésus présente à tout homme pécheur.
