Dans les versets 54-56, le texte présente plusieurs variantes :

1° le texte reçu avec A, C, D, majuscules, Itala, ajoute à la question des disciples : (verset 54) comme aussi a fait Elie. (2Rois 1.10-12)

D'après Sin., B, versions la plupart des critiques modernes omettent ces mots, qu'on suppose avoir été écrits en marge d'abord, pour disculper les disciples au sujet de leur étrange question, puis reçus dans le texte. D'autres, au contraire ont pensé qu'ils avaient été retranchés à cause du blâme que la réponse de Jésus parait jeter sur le prophète Elie.

2° Ces mots de la réponse de Jésus : Vous ne savez de quel esprit vous êtes, manquent dans Sin., A, B, C, mais bien que Tischendorf et d'autres critiques les retranchent, ces paroles portent un cachet d'originalité et de vérité qu'on ne peut méconnaître.

3° Enfin, cette dernière sentence qui se trouve dans le texte reçu : Car le fils de l'homme n'est point venu pour faire périr les âmes des hommes, mais pour les sauver, est omise par Sin., A, B, C, D et la plupart des majuscules Elle parait avoir été empruntée à Luc 19.10.

- Quant au sens de ce récit, il est des plus instructifs. C'est l'amour pour Jésus qui cause l'indignation des disciples Jacques et Jean, et qui parait justifier leur désir de voir punis par le feu du ciel ceux qui repoussent le Sauveur.

Cette justification est celle qu'ont invoquée de tous temps les fanatiques et les persécuteurs. Jésus la condamne formellement. Sa réprobation est déjà vivement exprimée par son geste : se tournant (vers eux) il les réprimanda.

Les paroles qu'il prononce peuvent se traduire comme nous le faisons ici, avec toutes nos versions françaises depuis Calvin, et signifier : "Vous ignorez quel mauvais esprit vous inspire une telle pensée et une telle question."

Ou bien elles peuvent se rendre, comme le fait Luther, par une question : "Ne savez-vous pas de quel esprit vous êtes ? l'esprit que vous avez dû puiser dans mes paroles et dans ma vie, l'esprit de l'Evangile qui est celui de la miséricorde et de la grâce ?"

La plupart des interprètes allemands s'attachent à ce dernier sens, qui est très beau.

Mais la première version parait plus en harmonie avec ces mots : il les réprimanda. Au reste, il est bien évident que Jésus, en leur reprochant une mauvaise pensée, voulait faire pénétrer dans leurs cœurs l'esprit de sa tendre charité ; en sorte que, dans la pratique, les deux interprétations se concilient.
