World English Bible Don't be afraid of those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul. Rather, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.

Comparer verset 26. Nouveau motif de ne pas craindre, alors même que la proclamation courageuse de la vérité pourrait vous coûter la vie. A cette crainte sans raison d'être, opposez la seule crainte raisonnable, celle du souverain Juge. Et pour cela comparez et pesez bien les motifs de ces deux craintes : d'une part, le corps seul en la puissance des adversaires, et l'âme qui leur échappe ; d'autre part, le corps et l'âme perdus dans la géhenne éternelle. (Matthieu 5.29, note.) Combien de martyrs cette parole a soutenus jusqu'à leur dernier soupir ! D'excellents interprètes (Stier, Olshausen et d'autres) ont pensé que Jésus oppose à la crainte des hommes, non la crainte de Dieu, mais la crainte du diable. C'est lui, pensent-ils, qui perd, détruit l'âme et le corps.

Les termes mêmes du texte : celui qui est puissant, ou selon Luc Luc 12.5 "qui a l'autorité de jeter l'âme dans la géhenne," excluent absolument cette idée. (Comparer Jacques 4.12)

Et quel encouragement y aurait-il pour les disciples dans cette crainte du diable, qui les aurait au contraire asservis ? Qui ne voit enfin que Jésus, continuant son discours, (verset 29) appelle immédiatement à la confiance en Dieu, qui est inséparable de la crainte de Dieu ?
