Grec : Toi, es-tu celui qui vient ? C'est-à-dire le Messie, le Libérateur.

Depuis longtemps le Messie était désigné comme celui qui vient. Cette expression indique la certitude et la proximité de sa venue. (Malachie 3.1 ; Psaumes 40.8 ; comparez Hébreux 10.37).

Ce mot si direct : toi, est opposé à celui-ci : un autre. Il faudrait en attendre un autre si tu ne l'étais pas, parce qu'il est impossible que les promesses de Dieu pour le salut du monde ne s'accomplissent pas. Mais d'où pouvait naître cette question ? Elle étonne au premier abord, après les témoignages si nombreux et si précis que Jean-Baptiste avait rendus à la messianité de Jésus. (Matthieu 3.11,12 ; Jean 1.23-37 ; Jean 3.25-36)

Aussi, craignant de voir une contradiction entre ces témoignages et cette question, un grand nombre d'interprètes ont cherché de diverses manières à diminuer la portée de la démarche de Jean. Elle devait, a-t-on pensé, pousser Jésus à une action plus décisive pour l'établissement de son règne, dans le sens où Jean l'avait annoncé. (Jean 3.12)

Mais une telle intention serait-elle conciliable avec la profonde vénération de Jean pour Jésus ? Jean avait pour but, selon d'autres, d'offrir à ses disciples une occasion de voir le Sauveur, d'entendre son témoignage, de s'attacher à lui. Cette interprétation est devenue traditionnelle depuis les Pères et les réformateurs. Mais c'est réduire à une fiction, non seulement la grave question du prophète, mais encore la solennelle réponse de Jésus, qu'il adresse expressément à Jean. (verset 4)

Aussi les exégètes les plus autorisés de nos jours prennent ils la question comme la réponse au sens propre. Jean était depuis près d'un an dans sa prison ; il ne voyait point s'établir avec puissance le règne qu'il avait annoncé ; Jésus ne faisait rien pour le délivrer. Il y eut alors pour lui un moment où, peut-être dans le pressentiment de sa fin tragique, il sentit sa foi s'obscurcir ; son âme fut assaillie par l'impatience où le découragement. De là la question qu'il adresse à Jésus dans un moment d'angoisse. (Comparer Luc 7.18, note.) Il se demandait si Jésus était bien le Messie ; s'il ne fallait pas en attendre un autre. Les Juifs croyaient que divers envoyés de Dieu devaient préparer l'œuvre messianique. (Matthieu 16.14 ; Luc 9.19 ; Jean 1.19-21)

Jean ne conteste pas la mission divine de Jésus ; il reconnaît que Jésus lui est supérieur, et c'est pour cela qu'il s'adresse à lui pour être éclairé ; mais il se dit que peut-être, malgré tout, il n'était encore qu'un prophète, un précurseur comme lui, et que, par sa prédication et ses œuvres d'amour, il adressait un suprême appel à son peuple et préparait la venue du Roi divin, qui "baptiserait de Saint Esprit et de feu et nettoierait son aire." (Matthieu 3.11,12)

On a objecté qu'un tel doute ne pouvait se produire chez Jean après la scène du baptême, dont il avait été témoin. (Matthieu 3.13-17 ; Jean 1.32-34) Mais n'est-ce pas le propre du doute d'ébranler la certitude que nous puisons dans ces révélations célestes ? Rien de plus naturel psychologiquement, rien de plus conforme à l'expérience des hommes de Dieu, surtout sous l'ancienne alliance. (Moise, Elie, etc.)
