Ce n'est point, comme on l'a dit, pour chercher du renfort que l'esprit méchant amène avec lui sept autres esprits plus méchants ; il n'éprouve aucune résistance. Ce trait de la parabole indique seulement le progrès du mal, une domination plus complète de la puissance des ténèbres. C'est ce que Jésus exprime clairement par cette dernière condition pire que la première (grec dernières choses pires que les premières). C'est là l'explication de toute la parabole : d'abord un démon, ensuite huit. (Comparer 2Pierre 2.20)

Telle est l'application de tout cet enseignement. (verset 43, note.) Mais quelle époque de l'histoire de son peuple Jésus a-t-il en vue ? On a répondu : le temps où ce peuple avait été délivré du démon de l'idolâtrie par l'influence des prophètes et par l'exil, et où les sept démons d'un orgueilleux pharisaïsme s'emparèrent de lui pour détruire en lui toute aspiration à une justice supérieure et le rendre incapable de se repentir et de recevoir le salut que Dieu lui destinait.

Mais Jésus parle de l'avenir : "Ainsi il en sera." Il pense donc à une œuvre qui est en voie d'accomplissement. L'annonce du règne de Dieu par Jean-Baptiste, l'action puissante du Sauveur, "venu pour détruire les œuvres du diable,"tout cela n'a produit qu'une impression passagère sur cette méchante génération : elle va s'endurcir dans son incrédulité et elle périra. Tous les premiers symptômes de l'incurable maladie sont là. (versets 24,31,32)

- Si Jésus parlait de nos jours, il est évident qu'il ferait la même application à plus d'un peuple, à plus d'une église, à plus d'une âme !
