Oui heureux, car une telle foi ouvrait à Pierre la source du bonheur présent et éternel !

- Jésus donne à son disciple son ancien nom complet, par opposition au nouveau qu'il va lui confirmer. (verset 18 ; comparez Jean 1.43)

Quelques interprètes ne veulent voir dans ces noms de Simon, fils de Jona, que la solennité du discours. (L'original conserve le mot hébreu : Barjona, fils de Jona.)

D'autres pensent que Jésus les donne à Pierre à cause de leur signification : Simon, celui qui écoute, qui sait écouter et entendre ; Jona, la colombe, l'emblème de l'Esprit. (Matthieu 3.16) Mais telle n'est point l'intention du Sauveur. En donnant à son disciple son ancien nom, en ramenant ainsi sa pensée sur son état naturel, dans lequel il n'aurait jamais pu faire une telle confession, Jésus le prépare à la solennelle déclaration qui suit sur l'origine de sa connaissance et de sa foi.

La chair et le sang, c'est l'homme mais l'homme naturel tel qu'il naît et vit sans la régénération par l'Esprit. (Jean 3.6,1Corinthiens 15.50 ; Galates 1.16)

Or, ce n'est pas là ce qui révèle à une âme la divinité de son Sauveur. Le Père seul le fait par son Esprit. Sans cette action divine, la présence même et la parole de Jésus n'auraient pas suffi pour amener Pierre a la foi, comme le prouve l'exemple de tant de ses auditeurs qui n'y parvinrent point. (Jean 6.60-66)

- L'objet du verbe t'ont révélé n'est pas exprimé en grec ; il ressort de la confession de Pierre : (verset 16) c'est le fait que Jésus est le Messie, le Fils de Dieu.
