"If anyone sins, and commits a trespass against Yahweh, and deals falsely with his neighbor in a matter of deposit, or of bargain, or of robbery, or has oppressed his neighbor,

Quelle est la liaison de l'instruction qui débute par ces mots avec celle qui précède ? Ce sont deux faces d'un même sujet : la charité ne permet ni de scandaliser ni de mépriser les petits et les faibles ; (versets 1-14) quelle conduite inspirera-t-elle à celui qui, au lieu de faire un mal pareil, aura à le souffrir ?
C'est cette conduite que Jésus retrace dans ses phases diverses. (versets 15-17) En l'exposant, il généralise sa pensée, et embrasse ce qui concerne les rapports mutuels entre frères dans la même communauté. Si l'un pèche contre l'autre, l'offense, lui fait tort, celui-ci doit d'abord aller, sans attendre que son frère revienne à lui, le reprendre, l'avertir, lui représenter son tort, mais seul avec lui, condition importante de prudence et de charité meilleur moyen de le gagner en évitant de blesser son amour-propre.
- Mais cette interprétation suppose authentiques les mots contre toi, qui manquent dans Sin., B, etc., et que plusieurs critiques omettent. Si on les supprime, il ne s'agirait point d'une tentative de réconciliation entre deux frères, mais en général d'une répréhension fraternelle pour une faute quelconque.
Cependant les autorités sur lesquelles on se fonde pour ce retranchement ne sont point décisives. Ensuite, c'est bien de réconciliation et de pardon des offenses que Jésus a dû parler, (comparez Luc 17.3) s'il en était autrement, on aurait peine à comprendre la question de Pierre (verset 21) qui paraît occasionnée par le discours précédent. Il faut donc retenir les mots contre toi.
Gagné, à quoi ? Les uns répondent : gagné à toi, tu auras fait ton frère de celui qui t'avait offensé, vous serez réconciliés dans la charité.
D'autres assignent à l'action conciliatrice un but plus élevé, et interprètent : Tu l'auras gagné pour Dieu, pour la vie de l'âme, qu'il était en danger de perdre. Pourquoi n'admettrait-on pas l'une et l'autre de ces explications ? (Comparer 1Corinthiens 9.19 ; 1Pierre 3.1)
Ces principes peuvent s’appliquer n'importe où et en toutes circonstances, mais ils sont hélas bien souvent négligés par tous. La conduite que Christ enseigna expressément à Ses disciples est hélas peu suivie !
Dans tous nos différends, nous devons chercher les directives à suivre par la prière : ne sous-estimons pas les promesses divines. Où que ce soit, et à chaque fois que nous nous rencontrons au Nom de Christ, nous devons considérer ce Dernier comme présent parmi nous.
