Dès que les pourparlers sont rompus, les Edomites prennent les armes pour empêcher que le passage ne soit forcé. Nous voyons à cette occasion éclater l'antipathie du peuple édomite contre les Israélites, héritage de celle qui avait régné entre les pères des deux peuples. Sur le changement subséquent de conduite de la part des Edomites (Deutéronome 2.4,29, voir à ce dernier passage).
