Il semble au contraire d'après ce verset que c'est le sort, comme expression directe de la volonté de Celui qui donne cette terre, qui décide de tout. La solution est celle-ci : Du sort doit dépendre l'emplacement général des tribus au nord, au milieu ou au midi, tandis que l'étendue du territoire et les frontières précises seront fixées d'après la population. Puis, le sort pouvait encore déterminer la répartition entre les familles du territoire de la tribu. il y eut sans doute par suite de circonstances particulières des déviations de ce mode de partage (ainsi pour les tribus qui s'établirent à l'est du Jourdain et pour lesquelles il n'est pas parlé du sort). Michée 2.4-5 montre combien ce mode de partage était profondément entré dans l'esprit du peuple ; voir aussi Psaumes 16.5-6. Sur l'emploi du sort, comparez Proverbes 16.33 ; 18.18.
