Voilà : ce terme, répété au verset 8, indique de nouvelles constatations que fait le pécheur. Il découvre que l'iniquité remonte à la racine de son être, à tel point qu'avant la naissance déjà péché nous environne et est comme notre nid, (Calvin). Le péché originel est affirmé ici de la manière la plus énergique, non au point de vue philosophique, mais par un acte de condamnation que le pécheur porte contre lui-même. Ce n'est point en effet pour atténuer sa faute ou pour s'en décharger sur ses parents que le coupable remonte si haut ; c'est au contraire pour s'associer au jugement que Dieu porte sur la profondeur de sa corruption.

Purifie-moi avec de l'hysope, par le sang de Christ répandu sur mon âme, par une foi vivante, comme une eau de purification. Le sang de Christ est appelé le sang d'aspersion, Heb 12:24. Si ce sang de Christ lave tous les péchés, il lavera donc les nôtres Heb 10:2. Le psalmiste désire d'abord être purifié avant d'obtenir du réconfort ; si son péché, cause amère de souffrance, est ôté, il peut alors prier par la foi : « accorde-moi la paix afin que dans ma désolation je puisse être réconforté. Cache Ta face loin de mes péchés ; ôte toute trace de mes iniquités dans Ton saint livre ; efface-les et disperse-les, comme le sont les nuages, dispersés par les rayons du soleil.

Le croyant aspire au renouvellement et à la sainteté autant qu'à la joie du salut. David a vu maintenant, plus que jamais, à quel point son cœur était mauvais et se lamente tristement de cet état ; il s'aperçoit qu'il n'est pas en son pouvoir de le modifier et demande ainsi à Dieu de le purifier.

Quand le pécheur ressent ce besoin de changement nécessaire et constate que Dieu est capable de le faire, il commence par le Lui demander. L'auteur savait que par son péché il avait attristé le Saint-Esprit et avait ainsi provoqué son éloignement. Il ressentait une véritable épouvante. Il a prié pour obtenir le réconfort et la restauration divine ; quand nous doutons de l'intérêt du salut, comment pouvons-nous en espérer la joie ? C'est ce qui a affaibli David. Il a prié ainsi : « je suis prêt à tomber soit dans le péché, soit dans le désespoir, donc soutiens-moi Par Ton Esprit ». Ton Esprit est un Esprit libre, libre lui-même, travaillant en toute liberté.

Plus nous serons joyeux dans notre devoir, plus nous aurons de constance à l'accomplir. Qu'est-ce que la liberté offerte par Christ à Son peuple, en opposition avec le joug de la servitude Galates 5:1.

C'est l'Esprit d'adoption qui s'adresse au cœur. Ceux dont Dieu est le Dieu de leur salut, savent qu'Il les délivrera de leurs fautes ; car Il est le Dieu du salut, le salut du péché. Nous devons donc nous adresser à Lui, le Seigneur : « Tu es le Dieu de mon salut, délivre-moi de la domination du péché ». Et quand les lèvres s'adressent à Dieu, que ne devraient-elles demander sinon le bénéfice de Sa grâce et de Son pardon ?
