Ce verset renferme, sous forme de conclusion (ainsi), un résumé de versets 14-16, et plus spécialement la répétition des deux idées énoncées à verset 14. Il sert de transition au développement suivant, où l'apôtre montre ce qu'a d'inexcusable la conduite d'Israël.

La foi vient de l'audition, et l'audition se produit par la parole de Christ. La parole de Christ est la leçon de Sin., B, C, D, etc. Les autres documents portent : la parole de Dieu.

La parole de Christ est, suivant les uns, l'ordre qu'il donne à ses apôtres d'annoncer l'Evangile à tous les hommes ; (Matthieu 28.19) suivant les autres, l'enseignement de Christ, toute la révélation salutaire qu'il a apportée au monde, et qui est le point de départ et le fondement de la prédication chrétienne. L'emploi du mot parole, dans versets 8,18, est plus favorable à ce dernier sens.
