- Soit celui qui enseigne (la construction change : au lieu de la fonction, celui qui la remplit), qu'il se renferme dans l'enseignement, s'y consacrant tout entier. Le docteur ne reçoit pas de nouvelles révélations, comme le prophète, son rôle est d'exposer les vérités déjà connues.

- Soit celui qui exhorte, qu'il se renferme dans l'exhortation. D'après 1Corinthiens 14.3, on pourrait croire qu'exhorter est la mission du prophète ; il ressort de la distinction faite ici par l'apôtre que l'on peut exhorter sans avoir le don de prophétie.

- Que celui qui donne, (grec) qui transmet, qui fait part de ses biens aux indigents, (Ephésiens 4.28) le fasse avec simplicité, sans que "sa main gauche sache ce que fait sa main droite," sans s'élever dans le sentiment de sa générosité.

- Que celui qui préside le fasse avec zèle. Il s'agit de celui qui est à la tête d'une entreprise charitable, ( 3.8) plutôt que de celui qui dirige une Eglise ; (1Thessaloniciens 5.12) cela ressort de la place donnée à cette exhortation, entre celle qui concerne la bienfaisance et celle qui a trait à l'exercice de la miséricorde. Celui-ci doit être pratiqué avec joie, avec cet empressement et cette bienveillance qui sont nécessaires pour rendre du courage aux pauvres et aux affligés.
