1 à 25 L'Egypte.

Le sujet de cette prophétie est la chute de la puissance de l'Egypte et la conversion finale de ce peuple à Jéhova. Elle est ainsi le pendant de la précédente, qui annonçait la conversion de l'Ethiopie. Rien dans ce morceau ne permet de fixer exactement la date de sa composition ; mais il nous paraît probable qu'il appartient à la même époque que les deux précédents. Cette prophétie a, en effet, pour but, comme celles du chapitre 18 et du chapitre 20, de détourner Israël de la funeste politique de l'alliance égyptienne.

Ce chapitre s'ouvre par le tableau des calamités qui vont frapper l'Egypte (versets 1 à 10) ; il décrit ensuite l'impuissance de ses chefs à rien faire d'efficace pour la sauver (versets 11 à 15) ; il se termine par la promesse de sa conversion finale et de sa guérison par Jéhova (versets 11 à 15). Une belle symétrie règne dans ce morceau, l'un des plus limpides qu'ait composés Esaïe : la dernière partie répond à la première ; la bénédiction efface les effets cruels du châtiment ; la partie intermédiaire, plus courte, forme la transition de l'une à l'autre : l'apogée de la détresse est le point de départ de la conversion.

1 à 10 Le prophète contemple le jugement qui va fondre sur l'Egypte : guerre civile, domination étrangère, épuisement de toutes les ressources du pays.

Porté sur un nuage... Les nuées sont souvent, représentées comme le char de Jéhova (Psaumes 18.10-11 ; 104.3).

Les idoles de l'Egypte tremblent : car elles se souviennent d'avoir déjà ressenti une fois la puissance de son bras (Exode 12.12).

La délivrance de l'Éternel, et la conversion de Son peuple. (Esaïe 19:18-25)

Dieu, avec Ses jugements, fondra sur l'Égypte. Il fera subir aux Égyptiens, leurs propres méthodes de destruction.

Quand les impies échappent au danger, ils pensent être alors en Sécurité ; mais le mal poursuit les pécheurs, et les rattrape rapidement, à moins qu'ils ne se repentent.

Les Égyptiens seront livrés entre les mains de celui qui les traitera avec détermination et rapidement. Les Égyptiens étaient renommés pour leur sagesse et leur science ; malgré tout, l'Éternel avait prévu de les abandonner à leur destin pervers, et à leurs querelles internes, jusqu'à ce que leur pays soit un objet du mépris et de pitié.

Dieu fait en sorte que les pécheurs soient effrayés par ceux qu'ils ont pu dédaigner et opprimer ; le Seigneur des seigneurs sera pour les « ouvriers d'iniquité » et ceux qui les côtoient, une véritable terreur ; ils seront effrayés par tout ce qui les entoure.

      21 In that day will I cause a horn to bud forth to the house of Israel, and I will give you the opening of the mouth in their midst; and they shall know that I am Yahweh.

      13 Thus says the Lord Yahweh: I will also destroy the idols, and I will cause the images to cease from Memphis; and there shall be no more a prince from the land of Egypt: and I will put a fear in the land of Egypt.
