4 à 7 Les caractères de la charité.

Comme l'apôtre personnifie la charité, il n'emploie en retraçant sa belle et sainte image ni épithètes pour la définir, ni adjectifs pour la qualifier, mais uniquement des verbes, le mot de l'action ; il dit ce qu'elle fait ou ne fait pas, conformément à sa nature intime. Il nous montre par là qu'elle n'est pas un sentiment vague et contemplatif du cœur, mais un pouvoir énergique qui agit dans la vie et en transforme tous les rapports.

- Ainsi elle use de patience (Grec : "de longanimité," elle "longanimise"), en ne se laissant point provoquer par le mal ; bien plus, son inépuisable bonté répand autour d'elle le bien, les bénédictions qu'elle puise à la vraie source.

Elle ne porte point envie ou jalousie.

Grec : "N'use point de vanterie, de jactance," ou encore de vanité, de fatuités ni en paroles ni dans la conduite.

Ce texte nous montre quelques « bénéfices » apportés par l’amour, afin que nous puissions juger si nous les possédons, ou dans le cas contraire, que nous ne cessions de les rechercher. L’amour est une preuve tangible de notre régénération spirituelle, il est à la base de notre foi en Christ.

Dans cette belle description de la nature et des effets de l'amour, l’apôtre désirait montrer aux Corinthiens que leur conduite était, sous de nombreux aspects, loin d’être en phase avec ces préceptes. La charité (l’amour) est totalement opposée à l'égoïsme ; elle ne désire ni ne cherche sa renommée, son honneur, son profit, ni sa satisfaction. Elle ne cherche pas à anéantir spécialement notre amour-propre, ni nos intérêts. Elle ne se satisfait jamais en blessant les autres, ou en les négligeant. Elle recherche toujours le bien-être et l’avantage personnel de notre prochain.

L’amour du chrétien est vraiment merveilleux ! Quel beau témoignage pourrait avoir le christianisme, si ceux qui le professent vivaient davantage sous ce principe divin, en considérant l’intérêt qui lui est dû, et en respectant le commandement que son Auteur merveilleux a institué à son sujet !

Demandons-nous si cet amour divin demeure en notre cœur. Guide-t-il notre comportement envers tous les hommes ? Sommes-nous disposés à laisser de côté notre égoïsme ? Nous avons dans ce texte un véritable appel à la vigilance, à l'assiduité, et la prière !
