For our exhortation is not of error, nor of uncleanness, nor in deception.

But even as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News, so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, who tests our hearts.

For neither were we at any time found using words of flattery, as you know, nor a cloak of covetousness (God is witness),

nor seeking glory from men (neither from you nor from others), when we might have claimed authority as apostles of Christ.

But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother cherishes her own children.

Even so, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you, not the Good News of God only, but also our own souls, because you had become very dear to us.

For you remember, brothers, our labor and travail; for working night and day, that we might not burden any of you, we preached to you the Good News of God.

You are witnesses with God, how holy, righteously, and blamelessly we behaved ourselves toward you who believe.

As you know, we exhorted, comforted, and implored every one of you, as a father does his own children,

Quel est le sens de verset 13 ? Comme l'apôtre parle ici de ses adversaires, (verset 12) la plupart des interprètes (Calvin, Olshausen, Gerlach) pensent qu'il se met à leur point de vue, afin d'expliquer les jugements divers qu'ils portent de lui, de son ministère, et de la manière dont il en par lait, se louant lui-même etc. "Les uns disent que j'ai été hors de sens, extravagant dans les élans de mon zèle, dans l'opinion que j'ai de moi ; eh bien ! c'était pour Dieu, non pour ma propre gloire, ou par de mauvais motifs. Les autres disent que j'ai été modéré, de sens rassis ; eh bien ! c'était par condescendance, par amour pour vous." Cette interprétation nous paraît recherchée et peu motivée. Il est plus simple et plus naturel d'admettre que Paul parle à son propre point de vue.
Il a dit aux Corinthiens (verset 11) qu'il est manifesté dans leur conscience, que tout son ministère est dévoilé devant eux, qu'il ne dit point cela pour se recommander à eux, mais afin qu'ils aient occasion de le faire envisager ainsi à ses adversaires, aux faux docteurs : (verset 12) puis, pour exposer plus complètement encore les motifs de son action en ces différents moments, il ajoute : "Si je vous ai paru dépasser toutes les bornes en fait de zèle, de sévérité, c'était en vue de Dieu, pour la gloire duquel on ne peut jamais assez se dévouer ; si j'ai été doux, modéré, me faisant tout à tous, c'était par condescendance et par amour pour vous."
Tout s'explique par l'amour de Christ qui nous presse (verset 14) Luther, qui entend ainsi ce passage, traduit : "Faisons-nous trop ? nous le faisons pour Dieu ; sommes-nous modérés ? nous le sommes pour vous ;" et il commente : "Sommes-nous sévères (tranchants) avec les gens ? nous servons pourtant Dieu en cela ; si nous nous comportons doucement et modérément envers eux, c'est pour leur rendre service, afin que, partout, tout soit juste et bien fait."
Au reste, dans les deux interprétations, le sens pratique reste le même. "Je suis prêt à parler et prêt à me taire, selon que le requerra la gloire de Dieu et le bien de l'Eglise. Je souffrirai volontiers d'être jugé insensé par le monde, pourvu que je sois insensé pour Dieu et non pour moi." Calvin.
"Ce passage, ajoute le réformateur, n'est pas seulement digne d'attention, mais d'une méditation assidue ; à moins que nous ne soyons animés du même esprit, les moindres achoppements ne tarderont pas à nous détourner du devoir."
