14 à 18 Ne vous unissez pas avec les infidèles.

Grec : "Ne devenez pas conjoints sous un joug étranger (ou un autre joug) avec les infidèles" (ou incrédules). L'image est prise de l'usage d'atteler sous un même joug des bêtes de somme de différentes espèces (ce que la loi défendait, Lévitique 19.19 ; Deutéronome 22.10).

Il y a en même temps dans cette image l'idée d'une infidélité et d'un assujettissement. C'est ce qui arrive spirituellement, lorsque des fidèles s'allient avec des incrédules pour une œuvre de Dieu qui exige un même esprit, la même foi, le même amour.

En général, les communications des chrétiens avec le monde, pleines de bienveillance et de charité, sans doute, doivent se borner au nécessaire, et avoir toujours pour but de répandre la connaissance de la vérité, la bonne odeur de l'Evangile de Christ.

Hors de là, le sel perd sa saveur, l'esprit du monde triomphe de l'esprit de la vie chrétienne.

- L'apôtre passe à ce sujet (versets 14-18) sans transition, frappé sans doute du contraste criant qui existe entre la vie chrétienne qu'il vient de retracer, et la mondanité, telle qu'elle règne en tout temps, en tous lieux, hors de la communion avec Dieu. D'ailleurs, on voit par 1Corinthiens 10 que les chrétiens de Corinthe étaient exposés à des dangers de ce genre par l'abus qu'ils faisaient de la liberté chrétienne.
