This is now, beloved, the second letter that I have written to you; and in both of them I stir up your sincere mind by reminding you;
2
that you should remember the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and the commandments of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior:
3
knowing this first, that in the last days mockers will come, walking after their own lusts,
4
and saying, "Where is the promise of his coming? For, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation."
5
For this they willfully forget, that there were heavens from of old, and an earth formed out of water and amid water, by the word of God;
6
by which means the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished.
7
But the heavens that now are, and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
8
But don't forget this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
9
The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but is patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
10
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.
11
Therefore since all these things will be destroyed like this, what kind of people ought you to be in holy living and godliness,
12
looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, which will cause the burning heavens to be dissolved, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?
13
But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.
14
Therefore, beloved, seeing that you look for these things, be diligent to be found in peace, without blemish and blameless in his sight.
15
Regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also, according to the wisdom given to him, wrote to you;
16
as also in all of his letters, speaking in them of these things. In those, there are some things that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unsettled twist, as they also do to the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.
17
You therefore, beloved, knowing these things beforehand, beware, lest being carried away with the error of the wicked, you fall from your own steadfastness.
18
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.

Voici déjà, bien-aimés, la seconde lettre que je vous écris. En toutes deux, je fais appel à des souvenirs, pour éveiller en vous une claire intelligence,

afin que vous vous souveniez des prédictions des saints prophètes et du commandement du Seigneur et Sauveur (transmis) par vos apôtres.

Sachez avant tout, que, dans les derniers jours, il viendra des moqueurs pleins de raillerie, qui marcheront selon leurs propres convoitises
4
et diront : Où est la promesse de son avènement ? Car, depuis que les pères sont morts, tout demeure comme depuis le commencement de la création.
5
En effet, ils oublient volontairement qu’il y eut, autrefois, des cieux et une terre qui, du milieu de l’eau et formée par l’eau, surgit à la parole de Dieu,
6
et que, par les mêmes causes, le monde d’alors périt submergé par l’eau ;
7
mais, par la même parole, les cieux et la terre actuels sont gardés en réserve pour le feu, en vue du jour du jugement et de la perdition des impies.
8
Mais il est un point que vous ne devez pas oublier, bien-aimés : c’est que, devant le Seigneur, un jour est comme mille ans et mille ans sont comme un jour ;

le Seigneur ne retarde pas (l’accomplissement de) sa promesse, comme quelques-uns le pensent. Il use de patience envers vous, il ne veut pas qu’aucun périsse, mais (il veut) que tous arrivent à la repentance.
10
Le jour du Seigneur viendra comme un voleur. En ce jour-là, les cieux passeront avec fracas, les éléments embrasés se dissoudront, et la terre, avec les œuvres qu’elle renferme, sera consumée.
11
Puisque tout cela est en voie de dissolution, combien votre conduite et votre piété doivent être saintes !

Attendez et hâtez l’avènement du jour de Dieu, où les cieux enflammés se dissoudront et où les éléments embrasés se fondront.
13
Mais nous attendons, selon sa promesse, de nouveaux cieux et une nouvelle terre où la justice habitera.
14
C’est pourquoi, bien-aimés, dans cette attente, efforcez-vous d’être trouvés par lui sans tache et sans défaut dans la paix.
15
Considérez que la patience de notre Seigneur est votre salut, comme notre bien-aimé frère Paul vous l’a aussi écrit selon la sagesse qui lui a été donnée.

C’est ce qu’il fait dans toutes les lettres où il parle de ces sujets, et où se trouvent des passages difficiles à comprendre, dont les personnes ignorantes et mal affermies tordent le sens, comme elles le font du reste des Écritures, pour leur propre perdition.
17
Vous donc, bien-aimés, qui êtes prévenus, soyez sur vos gardes, de peur qu’entraînés par l’égarement des impies, vous ne veniez à déchoir de votre fermeté,
18
mais croissez dans la grâce et la connaissance de notre Seigneur et Sauveur Jésus-Christ. A lui la gloire, maintenant et jusqu’au jour de l’éternité !
Ces paroles ne sont que le développement de celles du Sauveur : "Les cieux et la terre passeront." (Matthieu 24.35) Les éléments sont, d'après la théologie juive, des esprits qui émanent de Dieu et habitent la création qu'ils animent. (Spitta.)
La terre sera entièrement consumée, brûlée, est la leçon de A. On lit : disparaîtront dans C. Sin., B portent : sera trouvée ; cette leçon n'est intelligible que si l'on ajoute une négation, qui ne se trouve dans aucun document grec.
