1 à 9 Ruine d'Edom.

Vision : voir Esaïe 1.1 et Amos 1.1, notes.

Sur la personne d'Abdias (en hébreu Obadia : serviteur de l'Eternel), voir l'introduction.

Ainsi a dit le Seigneur, l'Eternel, à Edom. A proprement parler, le message de l'Eternel à Edom ne commence qu'au verset 2 ; le verset 1 est une espèce d'introduction indiquant à l'avance le moyen par lequel l'Eternel le châtiera. Tout le passage versets 1 à 8 est presque textuellement reproduit dans Jérémie 49.7 et suivants (voir l'introduction).

Nous avons reçu... On peut mettre ces mots dans la bouche du prophète et des Israélites, en traduisant : Nous avons entendu. Mais peut-être vaut-il mieux appliquer le nous aux nations qui sont appelées à combattre contre Edom et qui répondent à l'appel divin, en disant : Levons-nous !

Un héraut a été envoyé : manière figurée d'exprimer le mouvement qui pousse les nations à se coaliser contre Edom. Cette impulsion n'est pas d'inspiration humaine ; elle procède de la volonté de l'Eternel, à laquelle ces peuples obéissent sans le savoir ; comparez Esaïe 13.2 et suivants, où l'Eternel envoie de la même manière les Mèdes contre Babylone.

La première partie annonce la destruction d'Édom, faisant ressortir les brimades qu'ils infligeaient aux Juifs.

La seconde partie prédit la restauration des Juifs, et les gloires futures de l'église

* La destruction à venir sur Édom. Leurs offenses vis à vis de Jacob (Ab 1:1-16). La restauration des Juifs, et leur état de prospérité dans les temps à venir (Ab 1:17-21)

Ab 1:1-16 Cette prophétie est contre Édom. Sa destruction semble avoir été typique, comme le rejet de leur père Ésaü ; et semble se référer à la destruction des ennemis de l'église évangélique.

Remarquez la prédiction de l'issue de cette guerre : Édom sera mise en déroute et terrassée. Tous les ennemis de l'église de Dieu seront désapprouvés dans les choses qu'ils ont établies eux-mêmes.

Dieu peut facilement briser ceux qui magnifient et exaltent leur propre personne : et Il le fera ! La sécurité charnelle amène l'homme à « maturité » pour la ruine, et quand cette dernière survient, les choses ne font qu’empirer. Sur la terre, les trésors ne peuvent pas être amassés en sécurité car des voleurs peuvent y accéder et les voler ; il nous appartient cependant de nous amasser des trésors dans les cieux !

Ceux qui se confient dans la chair se forgent une arme contre eux-mêmes. Le Dieu de notre alliance ne nous décevra jamais, mais si nous plaçons notre confiance dans notre entourage, cela nous apportera des blessures et le déshonneur. Dieu ruinera à juste titre ceux qui, comprenant qu'ils doivent se garder du danger, n'utiliseront pas leur intelligence pour se garder du péché.

Toute violence, toute injustice sont « péché » ; la violence est pire si elle se dresse contre un enfant de Dieu. La conduite barbare des gens d'Édom, envers Judas et Jérusalem, leur est imputée.

En réfléchissant sur nous-mêmes, il est bon de considérer ce que nous aurions dû faire ; de comparer nos actes avec la norme de l'écriture.

Le péché, ainsi regardé dans le miroir du commandement, apparaîtra excessivement coupable. Ceux qui ne sont que des spectateurs oisifs face aux ennuis de leurs voisins, auront des comptes à rendre pour cela, alors qu'ils pourraient être des aides efficaces. Ceux qui pensent s'enrichir par la ruine du peuple de Dieu s'appauvrissent ; et ceux qui feront appel à leurs fétiches au jour de calamité se décevront eux-mêmes. Bien que le jugement commence par la maison de Dieu, cela ne s'arrêtera pas là. Que les croyants attristés et les oppresseurs insolents sachent que les troubles des justes se termineront bientôt, mais ceux des méchants seront éternels.

      12 You shall know that I, Yahweh, have heard all your insults which you have spoken against the mountains of Israel, saying, They are laid desolate, they have been given us to devour.
      13 You have magnified yourselves against me with your mouth, and have multiplied your words against me: I have heard it.
      14 Thus says the Lord Yahweh: When the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate.
      15 As you rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so will I do to you: you shall be desolate, Mount Seir, and all Edom, even all of it; and they shall know that I am Yahweh.

      Joël 3

      19 Egypt will be a desolation, and Edom will be a desolate wilderness, for the violence done to the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land.
