Voilà un argument auquel il n'y avait absolument rien à répondre, car reposait sur le témoignage de Dieu, (gr) le connaisseur des cœurs, qui avait donné aux païens convertis le Saint Esprit, sans faire aucune différence entre eux et les Juifs.

Pierre avait déjà, dans une autre occasion, produit cette raison irréfutable. (Actes 11.15,17)

Ce don de Dieu aux païens avait purifié leurs cœurs par la foi, sans le secours de la circoncision, qui n'était que le signe de la purification.

Les Judaïsants exigeaient encore ce signe, parce qu'ils ignoraient que c'est le cœur qui doit être circoncis. (Actes 7.51 ; Romains 2.28,29)
