Paul parle de justice à celui dont la vie était remplie d'iniquités, de tempérance (ou continence) à celui qui avait à ses côtés la complice d'une union adultère du jugement à venir à celui dont Tacite a pu dire : "Il pensait que tous les crimes seraient impunis pour lui." (Ann. XII, 54.)

Et Paul, témoin de Jésus-Christ, savait que son auditeur avait le pouvoir de l'envoyer à la mort ! JeanBaptiste paya de sa tête une déclaration analogue qu'il fit entendre à Hérode Antipas. (Matthieu 14.4)

La parole de vérité exerça son effet même sur un Félix : il fut effrayé. Mais il se hâte d'effacer cette première impression ; il congédie celui qui trouble sa conscience et montre bientôt toute la bassesse de ses sentiments. (verset 26)
