Tu as outragé le Seigneur par le moyen de tes serviteurs, et tu as dit ; je suis monté avec la multitude de mes chariots sur le haut des montagnes, aux côtés du Liban, je couperai les plus hauts cèdres, et les plus beaux sapins qui y soient, et j'entrerai jusques en son plus haut bout, et en la forêt de son Carmel.

Dans les versets 21 et 25, l'Assyrien fait une description hyperbolique de ses hauts faits passés et futurs. Le Liban, avec ses superbes forêts, représente ce qu'il y a de plus grand et de plus beau dans le pays, qu'il se propose de conquérir tout entier. Comparez 14.8 ; 23.9. Ces expressions ont d'autant plus d'à-propos que Sanchérib était entré en Palestine en franchissant le Liban pour suivre ensuite la côte phénicienne (voir plus haut).
