World English Bible Then I said, "Woe is me! For I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for my eyes have seen the King, Yahweh of Armies!"

La sainteté de Dieu doit faire trembler toute créature ; mais l'être souillé doit se sentir perdu en sa présence. Jacob (Genèse 28.17), Gédéon (Juges 6.22), Manoah (Juges 13.22), Ezéchiel (Ezéchiel 1.28), Zacharie (Luc 1.12), Pierre (Luc 5.8-9), Jean (Apocalypse 1.17), éprouvent cette frayeur quand ils se voient en face de quelque manifestation directe de l'être divin. Comparez l'expression la frayeur d'Isaac, Genèse 31.42,53.

C'est la souillure de ses lèvres qu'Esaïe confesse : il vient d'entendre la louange de Dieu sortir de bouches pures, et il ne se sent pas digne de s'associer à de tels chants (Exode 6.12).

Au milieu d'un peuple... A sa souillure personnelle s'ajoute celle qu'il contracte chaque jour en vivant en contact avec le peuple impur dont il fait partie.
