Dieu offre de produire devant Achaz un fait sensible et surnaturel qui soit pour lui et pour son peuple le gage certain de l'accomplissement de la promesse. Il y a des cas où Dieu punit ceux qui lui demandent un signe (Luc 1.20) ; les fidèles doivent savoir s'en passer. Dieu épuise donc ici en faveur d'Achaz toutes les ressources de sa bonté et de son support (il consent même à s'appeler encore son Dieu). Le choix du signe lui est laissé, afin qu'il n'ait aucun prétexte pour ne pas le trouver suffisant. 1Samuel 28 nous présente l'exemple d'un signe venant du schéol (sur ce terme, voir 5.14, note), 1Samuel 7.9-10 ; 1Rois 18.36-38, des exemples de signes venant du ciel (Luc 11.16).
