8 et 9 Deux sens sont possibles : La Syrie dépend de Damas, sa capitale, et Damas de Retsin, son roi. De même, Ephraïm dépend de Samarie, et Samarie de Pékach. Si donc Retsin et Pékach ne sont plus que des tisons près de s'éteindre, Juda n'a plus rien à redouter de ces deux Etats.
Ou bien : Retsin et Pékach ont chacun leur domaine et leur capitale ; c'est la limite qui leur est tracée d'en-haut ; s'ils veulent s'étendre au-delà, ils échoueront dans leur dessein.
Ce second sens paraît plus simple.

Encore 65 ans, Ephraïm... Sens : un royaume voué, comme celui des dix tribus, à une ruine irrémédiable, n'est pas vraiment à craindre. Comment s'est accomplie cette prophétie ? Samarie fut détruite déjà 20 ans après. On a fait remarquer ingénieusement que les derniers restes d'Ephraïrn ne cessèrent définitivement d'être un peuple que lorsqu'ils se fondirent dans la population étrangère, transportée dans le pays par Asarhaddon (2Rois 17.24 ; Esdras 4.2) ; cette transportation eut lieu probablement la deuxième année de Manassé (676 avant J-C), ainsi 65 ans après le moment où nous place Esaïe chapitre 7 (712-740). Plusieurs interprètes trouvent cette explication peu naturelle et pensent que les mots : Et encore 65 ans...des peuples (qui rompent le parallélisme régnant dans les versets 8 et 9), sont une glose qui fut d'abord ajoutée en marge, puis plus tard insérée dans le texte. Cette supposition est assez vraisemblable.
