1 à 6 L'arrivée de Jéthro

Cette arrivée eut-elle lieu pendant que le peuple était encore campé à Réphidim ou seulement après son arrivée à Sinaï  ? Au premier coup d'œil la seconde alternative paraît la seule possible ; car, au verset 5, Israël est déjà campé en la montagne de Dieu, et il paraît bien difficile de placer dans le court séjour qu'il fit à Réphidim tous les événements racontés dans ce chapitre : l'arrivée de Jéthro, son sacrifice, l'assemblée du peuple autour du tribunal de Moïse, le conseil de Jéthro et l'exécution de ce conseil par la nomination des juges. Il faut dans ce cas admettre dans le récit une anticipation ; l'auteur aurait placé ici le récit de la visite de Jéthro, pour ne pas interrompre plus tard celui de la législation sinaïtique, qui commence au chapitre 19 et se prolonge jusqu'au chapitre 10 des Nombres.

Cependant on peut opposer à ces raisons les raisons suivantes :

  1. 19.2 semble positivement placer la visite de Jéthro avant l'arrivée à Sinaï.
  2. Le verset 5 ne s'oppose pas nécessairement à cette manière de voir. Car nous avons vu 17.6 que Réphidim est déjà envisagé comme appartenant à Horeb, la montagne de Dieu. Le mot har, montagne, en hébreu, désigne aussi bien un district montagneux, un groupe de montagnes, qu'une sommité particulière.
  3. L'espace de temps que l'on peut attribuer au séjour à Réphidim est suffisant pour y placer tous les faits du chapitre 18, si seulement l'on consent à admettre que l'exécution du conseil de Jéthro n'eut lieu que plus tard, pendant le séjour à Sinaï. En effet, il s'est écoulé 45 jours depuis l'arrivée au désert de Sin jusqu'à l'arrivée à Sinaï. Celle-là eut lieu le 15 du second mois (16.1 et 19.1). Nous pouvons placer :
    • du 16 au 20 les circonstances relatives au don de la manne
    • le 21 et le 22 les deux campements de Dophka et d'Alousch
    • le 23, l'arrivée à Réphidim
    • les 24 et 25, le combat avec les Amalékites
    • le 26, l'arrivée de Jéthro
    • les 27 à 30, le séjour de Jéthro
    • le 1ier du mois suivant (3ième mois), le voyage de Réphidim à Sinaï

Nous croyons donc devoir en rester à l'ordre des faits, tels qu'ils sont rapportés ici (voir encore à 19.4-2), excepté en ce qui concerne la nomination des juges (versets 21-26) qui peut fort bien être mentionnée en cet endroit par anticipation, pour constater l'exécution subséquente de la mesure proposée par Jéthro.

Il y a un contraste remarquable entre la conduite des Amalékites et celle de Jéthro, chef de la tribu madianite des Kéniens (Juges 4.11). Les uns sont les premiers des Gentils qui entrent en hostilité avec Israël et son Dieu ; Jéthro et son peuple, qu'il représente, sont au contraire les premiers qui viennent rendre hommage à l'Eternel et à son peuple. Le bruit des merveilles accomplies en Egypte par l'Eternel, le libérateur d'Israël, était parvenu jusqu'à lui et il avait cru en ce Dieu (verset 10).
