He said to Abram, "Know for sure that your seed will live as foreigners in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them. They will afflict them four hundred years.

I will also judge that nation, whom they will serve. Afterward they will come out with great wealth,

The angel of Yahweh appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

When Yahweh saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the midst of the bush, and said, "Moses! Moses!" He said, "Here I am."

He said, "Don't come close. Take your sandals off of your feet, for the place you are standing on is holy ground."

Moreover he said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look at God.

Yahweh said, "I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows.

I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey; to the place of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.

Now, behold, the cry of the children of Israel has come to me. Moreover I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.

Come now therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh, that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt."

Go, and gather the elders of Israel together, and tell them, 'Yahweh, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, has appeared to me, saying, "I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt;

After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light and be satisfied. My righteous servant will justify many by the knowledge of himself; and he will bear their iniquities.

In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bore them, and carried them all the days of old.

L'ange de l'Eternel, c'est-à-dire suivant le sens habituel de cette expression : Dieu se manifestant (mais non s'incarnant) sous une forme visible. Voir sur le sens de ce terme l'appendice en fin du chapitre 21 de Genèse.
Du milieu des buissons. Le mot hébreu sené est le nom d'une sorte d'acacia épineux et velu, commun dans ces montagnes et qui leur a peut-être valu leur nom de Sinaï. Le mot hébreu au singulier a ici un sens collectif, ce qui explique l'article. Du milieu du taillis s'élevait la flamme provenant du buisson en feu.
Le feu est un des faits de la nature qui nous représentent le mieux ce que Dieu est : lumière, chaleur, vie, détruisant ce qui est vil, purifiant ce qui est précieux. Aussi l'Esprit de Dieu est-il apparu à la Pentecôte en langues de feu et Dieu est-il appelé, un feu consumant (Exode 24.17 ; Deutéronome 4.24, etc.).
Moïse remarque que le buisson enflammé demeure cependant complètement intact. C'est donc là un feu d'une nature particulière qui n'a besoin d'aucun aliment extérieur et qui s'entretient par lui-même. Dieu veut donner par là le magnifique emblème de ce qu'il est lui-même, comme la vie absolue, indépendante de toute matière, se reproduisant incessamment elle-même. C'est l'illustration de l'essence divine telle qu'il va la révéler à Moïse, en se désignant par le nom de Jéhova, Je suis (verset 14).
On a voulu voir dans le buisson qui ne se consume pas l'image du peuple d'Israël qui, même dans la fournaise de la persécution égyptienne, ne périt point. Mais ce sens est contraire à l'expression hébraïque d'après laquelle le buisson en feu représentait l'ange de l'Eternel. D'ailleurs, il ne serait pas naturel que Dieu fût représenté comme sortant du milieu du peuple, ainsi que le feu du milieu des buissons. Enfin Dieu veut révéler ici à Moïse non ce qu'est Israël, mais ce qu'il est lui-même.
