Il n'est pas à supposer que l'on eût fait en Egypte des dénombrements du peuple ; l'estimation donnée 12.37 n'était sans doute qu'approximative. Mais il était à prévoir non seulement qu'un dénombrement prochain aurait lieu, mais encore qu'il serait suivi de recensements plus ou moins réguliers, comme c'est le cas chez toute nation organisée ; c'est à ces recensements futurs que se rapporte l'expression : Lorsque tu feras... S'il ne s'était agi que du premier, raconté au commencement du livre des Nombres, Dieu eût dit : Tu feras le dénombrement... (Nombres 1.2).

La rançon de sa personne ; littéralement : la couverture de son âme ou de sa vie. Il y avait des sacrifices généraux institués pour la nation collectivement. Mais comme dans le cas dont il s'agit chaque individu est porté individuellement sur le registre des membres du peuple de Dieu, chacun aussi doit s'acquitter d'une redevance personnelle. Cette redevance couvre sa vie, en ce qu'elle rend hommage à la faveur gratuite de Dieu qui non seulement a contracté alliance avec Israël en général, mais qui daigne appliquer le même privilège à chaque Israélite en particulier, tout indigne qu'il soit d'appartenir à un Dieu si saint.

Afin qu'il n'y ait pas sur eux de fléau. Tout dénombrement est accompagné d'une tentation d'orgueil ; on compte sa richesse, et un sentiment d'élévation peut facilement résulter de la vue de sa force. Cette redevance avait pour but de faire contrepoids à ce sentiment d'orgueil qui aurait infailliblement attiré sur le peuple un châtiment divin ; voir 2Samuel 24
