Ou sinon... L'autre alternative serait le maintien de la réjection du peuple. Dans ce cas, Moïse veut être rejeté avec eux. Il ne peut consentir à être sauvé sans eux. C'est la réponse, non encore donnée jusqu'ici, à la proposition de l'Eternel (verset 10). Cette parole a de l'analogie avec celle de Paul, Romains 9.3, mais en diffère pourtant. Elle reste dans le domaine du possible, tandis que celle de Paul en sort expressément.

Ton livre. L'image d'un livre dans lequel Dieu inscrit les noms de ceux qu'il connaît comme siens, est empruntée à l'usage l'inscrire dans un registre les noms des membres du peuple, par tribus, branches, familles, maisons (Josué 7.16-18). Est privé du salut celui dont Dieu efface le nom de ce livre ; comparez Esaïe 4.3 ; Psaumes 69.29 ; Daniel 12.1 et plusieurs passages du Nouveau Testament.
