Dis-lui : « Voici ce que le Seigneur, l’Eternel, déclare à Jérusalem : Par ton origine et ta naissance, tu appartiens à la terre des Cananéens ; ton père était un Amoréen et ta mère une Hittite.

World English Bible and say, Thus says the Lord Yahweh to Jerusalem: Your birth and your birth is of the land of the Canaanite; the Amorite was your father, and your mother was a Hittite.

Ce verset et les suivants ne concernent pas spécialement la population de Jérusalem et ne lui attribuent point une origine jébusienne, c'est-à-dire amorrhéenne ou héthienne, comme on l'a cru. Il s'agit d'Israël lui-même dès l'époque de ses origines les plus reculées, lorsque de Canaan il vint habiter en Egypte et y tomba dans la plus douloureuse servitude.

De la terre du cananéen. C'était de là que venait Israël ; Ezéchiel profite de cette circonstance pour reprocher au peuple d'avoir toujours eu, en quelque sorte, du sang cananéen dans les veines et de trahir, moralement parlant, une extraction païenne. Ce reproche n'a de valeur qu'autant que le prophète sait parfaitement que l'origine du peuple, matériellement parlant, est toute différente.

Les Amorhéens et les Héthiens étaient les peuples du pays de Canaan du milieu desquels sortaient les Israélites au moment de leur émigration en Egypte.
