Nous sommes punis ; littéralement : Nous sommes sous le poids d'une culpabilité. Leur conscience se réveille enfin dans l'épreuve.

Le rôle de la conscience est de nous remémorer les paroles prononcées et les actes accomplis depuis longtemps.

Alors que la culpabilité des frères de Joseph était encore récente, ils n'en ont pas tenu compte, et se sont assis pour manger du pain ; mais maintenant, longtemps après, leur conscience les accuse. Notez le bon côté des afflictions : elles sont souvent la cause du réveil de notre conscience, et elles nous rappellent notre péché. Les frères de Joseph se sont sentis soudains vraiment coupables. Leur conscience les a maintenant touchés. Chaque fois que nous pensons avoir mal agi, nous devons nous rappeler le mal que nous avons pu faire aux autres. Seul Ruben s'est rappelé qu'il aurait pu, en persuadant ses frères, empêcher ce crime. Quand nous partageons avec d'autres leurs douleurs, il est bon d'avoir avec nous l'appui d'une bonne conscience, de façon à ne pas échanger avec eux de mauvaises pensées, mais au contraire un bon témoignage.

Joseph s'est retiré pour pleurer. Son rang social lui a dicté de garder ses distances vis-à-vis de ses frères, malgré l'affection naturelle qui emplissait son cœur, car ils ne se sont pas assez humiliés devant lui.
