Je ferai pleuvoir quarante jours et quarante nuits. Si l'on prend cette expression isolément, on doit en conclure que la cause du déluge sera uniquement la pluie tombant pendant six semaines. C'est là la pensée qu'un grand nombre d'interprètes attribuent, au jéhoviste, dont le récit se trouverait ainsi contredire les données du récit élohiste, qui assigne, comme nous verrons, une seconde cause à l'inondation : l'élévation des eaux de la mer, durant cent cinquante jours.

Se basant là-dessus, ces mêmes interprètes attribuent au jéhoviste tous les passages suivants où revient l'expression de quarante jours ( 7.12,17 ; 8.6 ) et y voient à chaque fois une nouvelle preuve de la contradiction entre les deux documents. Nous ferons ici deux seules observations :

1°) Le rédacteur, qui possédait les deux documents dans leur totalité, ne se serait-il pas aperçu de cette contradiction et aurait-il pu de bonne foi fondre en une seule narration suivie ces deux récits opposés ?

2°) Nous n'avons que des extraits du récit jéhoviste ; de ce que la seconde cause n'y est pas mentionnée, avons-nous le droit de conclure qu'elle fût totalement omise dans cette narration ?

Tous les êtres que j'ai faits. Il y a dans cette expression comme un sentiment de douleur.
