"Ceci a été un exemple admirable de vertu : à savoir que tout le monde étant plongé en délices, et se faisant à croire qu'il ne serait point puni, comme s'il n'y eût point de jugement de Dieu, Noé seul se proposa devant les yeux la vengeance divine, combien qu'elle dût être encore différée longtemps ; davantage qu'il a merveilleusement travaillé l'espace de six vingts (cent vingt) ans à bâtir l'arche ; et puis qu'il est demeuré ferme et constant au milieu de tant de moqueries des méchants, et qu'en la destruction de tout le monde, il n'a point douté qu'il ne dût être sauvé, mais qui plus est, il s'est assuré de sa vie au sépulcre, c'est a dire en l'arche." Calvin.

- Des interprètes récents font dépendre le complément : au sujet des choses qu'on ne voyait pas encore, non du participe : divinement averti, mais du participe : saisi de crainte religieuse ; (Hébreux 5.7) ils se fondent principalement sur l'emploi, dans le texte grec, de la négation subjective qui s'applique aux connaissances de Noé : au sujet de choses pas encore vues par lui.

- Il condamna par elle (ce pronom peut se rapporter à la foi ou à l'arche ou au salut, la première relation est la plus naturelle) le monde : il montra, en effet, que, puisqu'en croyant et en bâtissant son arche, il put se sauver avec sa famille, le monde périt par son incrédulité. (Comparer Matthieu 12.41-42 ; Romains 2.27)

Ou, suivant une autre interprétation, en travaillant avec foi à la construction de l'arche, Noé proclamait que le monde, la terre et ceux qui l'habitaient, (2Pierre 2.5) étaient mûrs pour la destruction.

- C'est encore par la foi que Noé devint héritier de la justice qui est selon la foi. Il entre en possession (Hébreux 1.14 ; 6.12) de cette justice quand, en raison de sa foi, il est déclaré agréable à Dieu ; il fut le premier qui obtint ce témoignage (Genèse 6.8,9)

Les interprètes modernes n'admettent pas, malgré la ressemblance des termes employés, que cette justice selon la foi soit la justice par la foi, comme l'entend Paul, (Romains 1.17 ; 3.22-24) le pardon des péchés en vertu de la rédemption opérée par Jésus-Christ.

- L'exemple de Noé est cité par Jésus-Christ pour faire ressortir le contraste de sa foi avec l'incrédulité et la sécurité charnelle du monde. (Matthieu 24.37 et suivants)
