L'esclave, le serviteur est né pour obéir ; le fils est destiné au commandement, (Matthieu 4.3,6) or, quoique Fils Jésus a obéi. (C'est le même contraste que l'on retrouve dans Philippiens 2.5-8)

Et c'est ainsi qu'il est à la fois notre Sauveur et notre modèle, type de l'humanité régénérée.

Mais ici il y a une autre pensée non moins frappante : il a appris l'obéissance, et cela par les choses qu'il a souffertes, non qu'il n'eut pas toujours connu et pratiqué l'obéissance, mais, dans la carrière de douleur qu'il parcourut jusqu'à son dernier soupir, il passa d'un sacrifice à l'autre de sa volonté, et acquit à chaque pas la conscience toujours plus claire d'une obéissance portée jusqu'à la plus haute perfection. (Hébreux 5.9)
