Les premiers mots du verset 39 ont été de tout temps compris et traduits de deux manières différentes :

1° Par l'impératif : scrutez ou sondez les Ecritures, ce qui serait une exhortation à le faire. (Ainsi, entre autres, Augustin, Luther, Calvin Tholuck, R. Stier, Hengstenberg, Keil et nos versions ordinaires.) Mais une telle exhortation ne formerait plus, avec la suite du verset et surtout avec les derniers mots, la contradiction poignante que Jésus veut signaler à ses auditeurs entre ces Ecritures qu'ils connaissent et leur incrédulité à l'égard de Jésus.

2° Pour cette raison, la plupart des interprètes : Bèze, Bengel, Olshausen, de Wette Meyer, MM. Weiss, Holtzmann, Astié Godet, et toutes les versions récentes adoptent l'indicatif : Vous scrutez les Ecritures.

C'est en effet ce que faisaient les Juifs, surtout depuis le retour de la captivité, ils étudiaient beaucoup les Ecritures, mais bien plus pour en compter les mots et les syllabes, que pour en pénétrer le sens et l'esprit. Ils pensaient avoir, par la seule connaissance littérale de ces Ecritures, la vie éternelle.

Sans doute, s'ils ne s'arrêtaient pas à la lettre, s'ils savaient s'élever jusqu'à l'esprit, (Jean 6.63 ; 2Corinthiens 3.6) ils trouveraient cette vie véritable et éternelle dans les Ecritures, car elles sont remplies du témoignage rendu au Libérateur qui devait venir.

Mais malgré la connaissance que vous avez de ces Ecritures, qui rendent témoignage de moi, ajoute Jésus, vous ne voulez pas venir à moi pour avoir la vie !

Quelle contradiction ! quel aveuglement ! Et c'est leur volonté dépravée qui en est la cause. (verset 40) C'est avec une profonde tristesse que Jésus prononce ces paroles. Elles rappellent sa plainte sur Jérusalem : Vous ne l'avez pas voulu. (Matthieu 23.37)
