Malgré toutes ces abominations qui rendaient inévitable le châtiment de Jérusalem, les Israélites pieux eux-mêmes ne pouvaient s'empêcher de compter encore sur un secours que Dieu leur enverrait ; ils regardaient surtout du côté de l'Egypte ; comparez Jérémie 37.5.

Ce verset divise en deux parties la description des misères du siège ; elle reprend au verset 18. Nous arrivons maintenant aux dernières péripéties du drame. Et d'abord la surveillance active des ennemis (verset 18) ; puis la rapidité de leur poursuite (verset 19) ; enfin la prise du roi, le dernier espoir d'Israël (verset 20).
