World English Bible Not many days after, the younger son gathered all of this together and traveled into a far country. There he wasted his property with riotous living.

Tel était le but du jeune homme en demandant sa part de biens. Le manque d'amour pour son père, la passion de l'indépendance, lui rendent intolérable la discipline de la maison paternelle et lui ôtent tout sentiment du bonheur dont il aurait pu y jouir.

Impatient de posséder sa liberté (peu de jours après), il part, sans songer au chagrin qu'il va causer à son père. Le pays éloigné où il se rend est l'image de l'état de l'homme sans Dieu. L'éloignement de Dieu est l'essence même du péché. Tout ce qui va suivre n'est que l'inévitable conséquence du départ de l'enfant prodigue.

Son histoire, au sens propre, est celle d'une foule de jeunes fils de famille qui, vivant dans la dissolution, arrivent promptement à dissiper leur fortune. Au sens figuré, elle est celle de l'homme sans Dieu, qui se voit promptement privé par d'amères déceptions, par le dégoût, par le remords, de ce bonheur imaginaire qu'il demandait aux jouissances plus ou moins grossières du monde.

- Le mot grec que nous traduisons par : vivre dans la dissolution, est un adverbe qui signifie l'opposé de salutairement ; or, l'opposé du salut, c'est la ruine. Le substantif, qui est formé de la même racine, se trouve dans Ephésiens 5.18 ; 1.6 ; 1Pierre 4.4.
