The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs. To him will the obedience of the peoples be.

He who sits in the heavens will laugh. The Lord will have them in derision.

Then he will speak to them in his anger, and terrify them in his wrath:

1° au lieu d'Ephrata, qui était l'ancien nom de Bethléhem
Genèse 35.19 ; 48.7 ; Ruth 1.2 ; 1Samuel 17.12 notre citation dit : Terre de Juda ; l'une et l'autre désignations devaient distinguer Bethléhem d'une autre ville du même nom située dans la tribu de Zabulon. Josué 19.15
2° au lieu des "milliers de Juda," mot qui désignait les subdivisions des tribus, ayant leurs chefs et leurs chefs-lieux, l'évangéliste choisit directement ce dernier terme comme le plus clair. On peut donc traduire chefs, ou chefs-lieux, principales villes, puisqu'il s'agit du siège d'un chef de milliers. Exode 18.21 ; Juges 6.15 ; Josué 22.14 etc.
3° la plus notable différence, qui parait faire dire à l'évangéliste l'inverse du texte hébreu, c'est cette phrase : "Tu n'es nullement la moindre..." Selon la lettre, c'est bien un contresens, mais non selon la pensée du prophète qui évidemment ne constate la petitesse de Bethléhem que pour faire ressortir sa grandeur, parce qu'elle donnera à Israël son gouverneur. C'est ce que dit l'évangéliste en citant librement la parole prophétique.
4° Il ajoute au texte de la prophétie une image destinée à décrire l'action du Sauveur, image qui était usitée chez les anciens pour désigner l'autorité royale, le gouvernement : "Il paîtra Israël, mon peuple." Ezéchiel 34.23 ; 2Samuel 5.2 comparez Psaumes 23.1 ; Psaumes 80.2 Nul terme ne pouvait mieux caractériser l'autorité du "Bon Berger." - Mais ce qui est plus frappant encore que la sainte liberté avec laquelle les écrivains du Nouveau Testament citent les Ecritures de l'Ancien, c'est la précision avec laquelle les scribes du temps résolvent par la prophétie la question d'Hérode sur le lieu de la naissance du Messie. Tout est clair pour eux dans la Bible, à laquelle ils restent indifférents après s'en être servis pour les autres ! Quel contraste avec la foi des mages !
