For there will arise false christs, and false prophets, and they will show great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the chosen ones.

- Les faux docteurs, qui prétendent représenter seuls le vrai Christ et sa doctrine, ont toujours la prétention de se légitimer par des signes et des prodiges, c'est-à-dire par des miracles de diverses sortes. (2Thessaloniciens 2.9)

N'avons-nous pas tous les faux miracles de l'Eglise romaine et, jusqu'en plein dix-neuvième siècle, les apparitions de la Vierge et les eaux merveilleuses de Lourdes ? Ces miracles, apocryphes ou authentiques, donnent une redoutable confirmation aux enseignements des faux docteurs, et leur permettraient de séduire les élus eux-mêmes, si cela était possible, si la fidélité de Dieu ne les gardait.
