Grec : en tant que vous l'avez fait à un seul de ces frères de moi, des plus petits.

Les interprètes discutent cette question : Qui est-ce que Jésus désigne par ce pronom démonstratif ces frères, ces petits ?

Les uns ont pensé qu'il s'agissait des chrétiens en général, d'autres, de ses disciples qui l'entouraient.

A quoi bon ces distinctions ? Jésus n'a-t-il pas enseigné, dans la parabole du Samaritain, que tout homme malheureux doit être l'objet de notre charité ? Comme lui-même était sans cesse entouré de pauvres, de petits, de malades, de péagers et de pécheurs méprisés, il se représente qu'ils se presseront encore autour de lui au jour du jugement, désireux d'obtenir son salut et ce sont eux qu'il désigne par ce mot mes frères, ces petits. Seulement cette expression à moi-même, indique nettement le motif des œuvres qu'il accepte et récompense. Par là il ne mentionne qu'un trait de la vie chrétienne, qu'un fruit de l'amour de ses disciples pour lui, mais ce trait, ce fruit, en suppose beaucoup d'autres provenant de la même source.

- Les chrétiens ne peuvent rien faire directement pour Celui qui les a tant aimés ; mais puisqu'il s'identifie avec le plus petit de ses frères, ils peuvent faire beaucoup pour lui, dans la personne de ces malheureux. C'est là une précieuse grâce qu'il ajoute à toutes ses grâces.
