Et voici... Quand venait de commencer ou allait commencer l'exécution de ces ordres, survint un fait inouï et qui paraissait impossible.

Et amena... Les autres Israélites, pour se livrer à l'idolâtrie et à la débauche, s'étaient rendus au sanctuaire de Péor. Mais celui-ci pousse l'impudence jusqu'à introduire l'étrangère dans le camp même de l'Eternel.

Qui pleuraient : sur le péché commis et la plaie qui en était la punition.

A l'entrée de la Tente. Il semble que ce fut devant le sanctuaire même que le coupable osa passer pour se rendre à sa demeure.

Phinées : qui se trouvait parmi ceux qui menaient deuil.
