Sans roi et sans chef... : sans roi légitime, comme David et sa dynastie, et sans chef, comme les chefs de propre choix qu'il s'était donnés en la personne de Jéroboam et de ses successeurs. Cette parole implique la perte de toute indépendance nationale, telle que le peuple la possédait encore soit sous la forme du royaume de Juda, soit même sous celle du royaume des dix tribus.

Sans sacrifice et sans statue... : sans culte divinement institué, comme celui qui se célébrait dans le ternple à Jérusalem : et sans culte idolâtre et de propre invention, comme celui des veaux d'or, qui se célébrait à Dan et à Béthel.

Sans éphod et sans théraphim : sans oracles vraiment divins comme ceux que Jéhova accordait au grand sacrificateur par l'Urim et le Thummim déposés dans l'éphod (Exode 38.30) ; et sans oracles dûs aux enchantements comme ceux des devins ou des dieux domestiques (les théraphim) que consultaient les païens. L'éphod était le surplis du souverain sacrificateur, dont il se revêtait pour consulter l'Eternel (1Samuel 23.9 ; 30.7). Les théraphim étaient de petites statues portatives que l'on consultait et auxquelles on attribuait une influence bienfaisante sur la maison où elles se trouvaient (Genèse 31.19).Quel tableau frappant de l'état d'Israël dans son premier exil d'abord, puis de son état présent qui est un exil à la seconde puissance et qui a duré déjà de longs jours !

Nous trouvons ici encore une parabole relative à Israël. Le peuple doit attendre, privé d'honneur et de toute joie, telle une veuve affligée ; mais plus tard, il sera de nouveau béni.

Ceux qui voudraient chercher le Seigneur, dans l'intention de vraiment Le trouver, doivent se soumettre à Christ et devenir Son peuple, en toute obéissance.

Nous ne devons pas seulement considérer le Seigneur et Sa grandeur, mais aussi le Seigneur et Sa bonté ; non seulement Sa majesté, mais aussi Sa grâce.

Même les écrivains juifs considèrent que ce passage s'adresse au Messie attendu ; la conversion future du peuple à Christ est prédite sans équivoque, ce qui confirme cette destinée de peuple mis à part.

Bien qu'au début il y ait eu de la crainte vis-à-vis de Dieu au vu de Sa sainte Majesté et de Sa droiture vengeresse, maintenant il y a l'expérience de la miséricorde et de la grâce en Jésus Christ ; Il est Celui qui conduit le cœur à Le Craindre et à le glorifier, en tant qu'Ami et Père.
