Le péché, ici personnifié comme le maître de l'homme, promet bien à ses esclaves un autre salaire ou une autre "solde" (le mot grec désigne proprement la paie qu'un chef donne à ses soldats) ; mais il les trompe.

Il n'est que mensonge, car il est en flagrante contradiction avec la vérité de Dieu, aussi bien qu'avec la vraie nature de l'homme. Il ne peut donner que ce qu'il a lui-même en partage : la malédiction et la mort.

Comme la liberté qu'il promet n'est qu'un éloignement toujours plus complet de l'unique source de la vie, son salaire est la mort. (verset 21 note ; Romains 8.13 ; Galates 6.8).

A ce salaire du péché, on pourrait penser que l'apôtre opposerait le salaire de la justice (verset 18) ou le salaire de Dieu ; (verset 22) mais d'après tout ce qu'il vient d'enseigner (comparez surtout Romains 3.21 et suivants ; Romains 4.4,5 ; 5.21), il ne peut parler que d'un (grec) don de grâce de Dieu : la vie éternelle est en Jésus-Christ, notre Seigneur, dans la communion vivante avec celui qui nous l'a acquise et qui l'entretient en nous par l'action de son Esprit.
