2 Chroniques 4.1

Then he made an altar of brass, twenty cubits its length, and twenty cubits its breadth, and ten cubits its height.
Et il fit un autel d'airain long de vingt coudées, et large de vingt coudées, et haut de dix coudées.

Le mobilier du temple.

- Voici une autre description du mobilier de la maison de Dieu. Le temple, qui comportait un portique, mais aucune porte intérieure, caractérisait en quelque sorte, la Grâce de l'évangile : elle masque aux regards extérieurs des méchants, les merveilles célestes à venir, à savoir, Christ en personne !

Il y avait l'autel d'airain. Sa fabrication spécifique n'a pas été mentionnée dans le livre des Rois. C'est sur cet autel que tous les sacrifices étaient offerts, ainsi que les offrandes sanctifiées. Le peuple qui adorait dans la grande cour, pouvait voir brûler les sacrifices. Les enfants d'Israël avaient ainsi devant eux, la préfiguration du grand Sacrifice, Celui de Christ, qui devait être offert une fois pour toutes, afin d'expier le péché, et de mettre fin à la puissance de la mort, ce que le sang des taureaux et des boucs était incapable de faire parfaitement. En voyant monter la fumée des sacrifices sur l'autel, le cœur de ces hommes pouvait en quelque sorte monter vers les cieux, dans le saint désir de rencontrer Dieu et de bénéficier de Sa faveur.

Dans toutes nos dévotions, nous devons maintenir notre regard de la foi, fixé sur Christ. Le mobilier du temple, plus conséquent que celui du tabernacle, préfigurait l'église future qui serait elle aussi plus grande, et les adorateurs du Seigneur qui seraient en plus grand nombre aussi.

Béni soit Dieu, là plénitude en Christ est dispensée pour tous !
