L'apôtre se nomme ainsi pour indiquer que la vision à laquelle il fait allusion appartient exclusivement à sa vie intérieure, "cachée avec Christ en Dieu." C'est parce que cet homme était entièrement en Christ qu'il faisait de telles expériences. (Comparer Galates 2.20)

S'il parle de lui comme d'un autre, à la troisième personne, au moment de raconter des grâces aussi signalées du Seigneur, c'est par humilité et parce que le fait qu'il va rappeler est tout à fait au-dessus de son activité personnelle.
