La manière dont ce premier acte public de l'Eglise s'accomplit est très importante : les apôtres proposent l'élection de sept frères ; ils indiquent les qualités qu'ils doivent posséder, puis (grec) ils établissent les élus par l'imposition des mains. (verset 6)

Mais c'est l'Eglise entière (la multitude des disciples, versets 2,5) qui les choisit.

Ce double principe de l'autorité apostolique et de l'organisation démocratique de l'Eglise se retrouvera dans tout notre livre des Actes.

L'Eglise se gouverne elle-même, sous la direction des serviteurs de la parole.

Dans des intérêts aussi sacrés que ceux de l'âme, on ne peut refuser à aucun membre du corps de Christ sa participation au gouvernement.

Mais ce principe suppose une Eglise vraiment chrétienne ; hors de là, on arrive à cette monstruosité, si fréquente de nos jours que ce sont les adversaires de l'Evangile qui font les élections et gouvernent l'Eglise dont ils ne se soucient que pour en ruiner les principes.

- Bien qu'il ne s'agisse pour la charge à créer ici que du soin des pauvres, ceux qui en seront revêtus ne doivent pas moins avoir d'abord un bon témoignage de toute l'Eglise, puis être des hommes remplis de l'Esprit de Dieu et de sagesse, (Comparer 1Timothée 3.8-13)

C'est que la charité n'est chrétienne que si elle est exercée avec foi et amour, et que le soin des pauvres ne doit pas avoir pour objet leur corps seulement mais aussi leur âme.

On a indiqué diverses raisons qui ont amené les apôtres à fixer le nombre des diacres à sept : c'était un nombre sacré, revêtu d'un caractère religieux ; (Genèse 21.28 ; Exode 37.23) chez les Juifs le conseil placé à la tête de chaque localité se composait de sept hommes (Josèphe, Ant. IV, 8, 14) ; on a supposé que les chrétiens de Jérusalem, pour prendre leurs repas en commun, étaient divisés en sept groupes (Zückler).
