Esaïe 53.1-12

10 à 12 La gloire du serviteur, récompense de son sacrifice.

Il a plu à l'Eternel...Dieu ne fait rien arbitrairement ; la mort du Messie a donc une cause légitime. Mais il faut retenir qu'il n'y a en lui aucun péché. Pourquoi donc Dieu a-t-il voulu qu'il souffrit ? Parce qu'il soutenait notre cause et qu'il ne pouvait être satisfait autrement que par sa mort au jugement de Dieu (Calvin).

Sacrifice expiatoire, hébreu ascham. Ce mot désigne le sacrifice pour le délit. L'idée spéciale de ce genre de sacrifice était celle d'une réparation ou compensation offerte à la loi pour certaines offenses. Le serviteur est donc représenté ici comme payant la dette que les pécheurs ne sont pas en état d'acquitter eux-mêmes (comparez le terme de rançon dont se sert Jésus Matthieu 20.28).

C'est son âme qui est offerte, ou plutôt qui s'offre elle-même. Il faut se rappeler que dans les sacrifices de l'ancienne alliance le sang est l'élément purifiant, parce qu'en lui réside la vie ou l'âme (Lévitique 17.11). Esaïe fait entendre clairement, par cette allusion aux rites lévitiques, que dans les souffrances volontaires du serviteur juste de l'Eternel, Israël trouvera la réalité de ce qui n'était que figuré par les sacrifices de l'ancienne alliance.

Au lieu de : Quand son âme aura offert... M. Reuss traduit : Ah ! tu ne donneras pas sa vie en expiation ! Ces mots exprimeraient la certitude que la vie du serviteur ne sera pas définitivement perdue, et prouveraient que le serviteur est un être collectif, qui subsiste, tout en succombant dans quelques-uns de ses membres. Le texte hébreu permet sans doute la traduction proposée par M. Reuss ; mais cette interprétation est en contradiction avec le reste du cbapitre, entre autres avec ces mots du verset 12 : il a livré son âme à la mort, et n'a d'autre avantage que de permettre d'échapper à l'idée d'un Messie personnel et à celle d'une résurrection de ce Messie, qui est la transition nécessaire de son sacrifice à son règne.

Le prophète mentionne une triple récompense des souffrances du serviteur :

  • une postérité : ceux que sa mort fait vivre, Jean 12.21
  • de longs jours : vie sans fin du Ressuscité, Apocalypse 1.18 ; Romains 6.9-10 ; Hébreux 7.16-24
  • enfin la prospérité de l'œuvre de Jéhova entre ses mains. Cette ceuvre est celle de l'établissement du règne de Dieu dans tout le monde, que le Rédempteur accomplit du sein de sa gloire. A la période d'humiliation et d'insuccès qu'il a traversée sur la terre, pendant son ministère en Israël, a succédé depuis son élévation une période de conquêtes spirituelles dont le terme sera la soumission de toute l'humanité à son empire, Jean 12.32 ; Philippiens 2.9-11

« Approchez-vous », et voyez combien Christ nous a aimés ! Il est impossible de prendre Sa place, Lui, par contre, a pris la nôtre. Il a ainsi ôté le péché du monde, en le prenant sur Lui. Il a subi la mort, qui est le salaire du péché.

Il faut remarquer la grandeur, la puissance et la magnificence du Sauveur. Christ n'accordera à nul autre qu'aux pécheurs repentants, le bénéfice de Son dévouement. Les desseins de l'Éternel s'accompliront inexorablement. Toutes les actions que nous pourrons entreprendre, conformément à la volonté divine, ne pourront que prospérer. L'Éternel verra s'accomplir la conversion et le salut des pécheurs. Beaucoup seront justifiés en Christ, à cause de la rançon qu'Il a donnée : sa vie !

Par la foi nous sommes justifié : Dieu est, de ce fait, glorifié, Sa Grâce nous est accordée, nous échappons à l'avilissement de la mort, et notre félicité éternelle est assurée. Nous devons connaître Jésus, croire en Lui, Celui qui a porté nos péchés, en nous évitant d'en subir les conséquences. Le péché, Satan, la mort, l'enfer, le monde et la chair, sont les ennemis puissants qu'Il a vaincus ! Celui que Dieu a « désigné » pour être le Rédempteur, accomplira, en tant que tel, Sa volonté.

Quand Dieu a ramené les Siens de la captivité du péché, ces derniers Le remercièrent : nul autre ne pouvait offrir un tel cadeau aux hommes ! Quand nous songeons aux souffrances subies par le Fils de Dieu, nous devons nous rappeler les innombrables transgressions que nous avons commises, et considérer la douleur qu'Il a endurée, sous la charge de notre culpabilité.

Tout cela est une ferme assurance pour le pécheur repentant, afin que son âme puisse s'appuyer sur ce fondement : nous sommes rachetés, par le sang de Christ, des bénéficiaires de Sa Grâce ; Il plaide continuellement en notre faveur, détruisant ainsi les œuvres du diable !

      8 Previously saying, "Sacrifices and offerings and whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin you didn't desire, neither had pleasure in them" (those which are offered according to the law),
      9 then he has said, "Behold, I have come to do your will." He takes away the first, that he may establish the second,

      10 We have an altar from which those who serve the holy tabernacle have no right to eat.
