12 et 13 Ces deux versets se rapportent encore au passage de la mer Rouge, ce prodige type, que les écrivains de l'Ancien Testament ne se lassent pas de célébrer, et auquel Esaïe lui-même revient si souvent. D'autres voient dans les versets 11 à 14 une récapitulation complète de l'histoire du peuple au temps de moïse : verset 11, le passage de la mer Rouge ; verset 12, le séjour au désert, l'eau jaillissant du rocher ; verset 13, le passage du Jourdain ; verset 14, l'entrée en Canaan. Ainsi Reuss. Cette explication ingénieuse ne se soutient pas quand on serre de près le texte. L'expression devant eux, et les mots : pour se faire un nom éternel, ne conviennent guère au miracle de l'eau sortant du rocher, mais s'appliquent bien au passage de la mer (comparez 2Samuel 7.23, le verbe fendit est celui même qu'emploie le récit, Exode 14.24.
