Romains 3.20. La doctrine fondamentale de la justification du pécheur par la foi seule, sans les œuvres de la loi, a été exposée par l'apôtre dans Romains 1.17 à Romains 5. (Voir les notes, et comparez ci-dessous les Galates 3 et Galates 5)

- Ces paroles (versets 15,16) prouvent que Paul est convaincu de trouver en Pierre la doctrine qu'il professait lui-même, car ces mots : nous, Juifs de naissance, sachant, etc., embrassent l'un et l'autre. (Comparer verset 13, note.)

Or, la vue de Juifs répudiant toute confiance pour le salut dans les œuvres de la loi, et s'appuyant uniquement sur la foi en Jésus-Christ, devait faire une profonde impression sur les païens convertis que de faux docteurs avaient, en partie, ramenés sous la loi. Il importait donc d'autant plus que l'exemple de Pierre à Antioche ne vint pas affaiblir cette impression et troubler la foi que Paul avait prêchée.
